Abul Quasem Al-Amin, PhD

A Canadian climate economist and environmental policy scholar working at the intersection of environmental economics, climate-change policy, and integrated assessment modelling. His work joins rigorous economic modelling to real-world policy across Southeast Asia, South Asia, and transitional economies. He advises the UNDP and UNDESA, and represents Malaysia in negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Profile

Biography

Abul Quasem Al-Amin is a Canadian climate economist of Pathan and Iranian descent. He was born in West Bengal, India, and was raised and educated in Bangladesh during the early years of his schooling, where his father was stationed for work. His ancestral lineage traces to Pathan and Iranian roots, with a grandfather who migrated to the Indian subcontinent for religious work in the late eighteenth century.

He completed his BSc and MSc in Economics at Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. He then earned a PhD in Environmental Economics through a joint programme at the National University of Malaysia, with external supervision from Professor Walter Leal Filho of the University of Manchester and Hamburg University.

Bridging rigorous economic modelling with international climate policy across Asia and transitional economies.

Following his doctorate, he held a prestigious MSCP postdoctoral fellowship at MIT (2017–2019) under Professor Larry Susskind, and later took visiting and professorial positions at Harvard University. He is the founding Advisor and Director of the Centre for Asian Climate and Environmental Policy Studies (CACEPS) in Windsor, Ontario, leading its research agenda since 2019.

With over 25 years of research experience, he has authored more than 151 peer-reviewed articles, of which 93 are ISI-indexed and 18 Scopus-indexed, alongside 7 Springer books. His work has accumulated over 8,008 citations, with an h-index of 47 on Google Scholar and 29 on the Web of Science.
